Performance Analysis of Adaptive Video on Demand Using Stochastic Petri Nets

In this pap erwe study the performance of an adap tive vide o on demand V OD system In this system channel resources are allocated more e ciently than in full VOD or ne ar VOD in which a separate channel is allocated for each user or a xed set of movies is played at regular time intervals resp ectively In adaptive VOD one channel can be allocated for sev eral users bunching property and users r equests c an be rejected even though ther e are channel resour ces available refusal by choice In addition to these fea tures the e ectiveness of adaptive VOD is based on de layed noti cation Users are not noti ed about the ac ceptance or the rejection of their requests immediately the request arrives to the server but after a time de lay We model this VOD system using stochastic Petri nets and use discrete event simulation to determine the performance of the system i e the number of r equests accepted by the video server compared to the number of requests o ered This is compared to the performance of an adversary system which does not exhibit the re fusal by choice prop erty
